Today I want to tell a fantastic story about how a routine means of transportation – an ordinary city tram – connected the socio-cultural space of Moscow and Hong Kong. And it inspired the creation of the Mikhail Bulgakov Society as an intellectual platform uniting people ready to discuss and develop the writer’s philosophical ideas.
On 27th October 2023, the Bulgakov Society and the Russian Club in Hong Kong hosted a Halloween party on tram No. 18.
The founder of the Bulgakov Society – Ms. Julia Charlton in her opening speech spoke about how the tram connected the socio-cultural space of Moscow and Hong Kong. And most importantly, she revealed the secret that it was the tram that inspired her to create the Mikhail Bulgakov Society as an intellectual platform uniting people ready to discuss and develop the writer’s philosophical ideas.
Ivan Bezdomny is shocked by what he sees. People gather around the deceased Berlioz and discuss the tragedy. It turns out that Annushka from Sadovaya street spilled the oil. Ivan, who has just heard a prediction from a foreigner, rushes to him for an explanation.
But the professor of black magic pretends that he does not understand Russian and leaves, accompanied by a strange man in a checkered jacket and a huge black cat. Bezdomny tries to catch up with them, but in vain.
Everyone believed the professor except Berlioz. The last straw of his patience was the announcement of this abnormal person that he was going to move into his apartment. Leaving Bezdomny to look after the crazy man, Berlioz was going to take action against the foreigner, but first he had to run to the telephone booth. One call and the problem is solved.
On the way, he reflected on the words thrown after him that the devil exists and there is a seventh proof of this. He did not have time to bring his thoughts to their logical conclusion.
We want to refresh your memory of the events that took place at the Patriarch’s Ponds in Moscow, where the chairman of the writers’ union Mikhail Berlioz and the poet Ivan Bezdomny were talking about Jesus Christ. A stranger intervened in their conversation and asked a very bold question about who, since there is no God, controls human life. In response to the statement “man rules himself,” he predicts Berlioz’s death: his head will be cut off by a “Russian woman, a member of the Komsomol” – and quite soon, because the mysterious Annushka has already spilled the sunflower oil.
Before meeting with Bulgakov, Elena Sergeevna was a respectable loving wife, mother of two children. Therefore, breaking up a family and taking possession of such a woman required enormous efforts from Bulgakov.
